Concrete Sealer for the Driveway

In Spring, its time to do the many maintenance jobs that are required after the damage that can be done by the frozen snows of winter. At autumn you might want to repare the cracks and wrinkles that heat and sun have made.

First you notice that your concrete driveway needs some repairs for the cracks that it now has. After that has been done you’ll need to find a good concrete sealer to ensure the life of your driveway. Asphalt driveways require resealing every year, but if you use a good concrete sealer it only needs to be done once every three to five years.

This is a project you can do yourself. To begin with you should clean the driveway. First sweep it thoroughly before giving it a wash down, making sure its dry before beginning to apply the concrete sealer. If the driveway is not clean the sealant will not adhere to it properly. 

The easiest way to apply the sealer is to do the job in sections. Don’t try to do the whole length or even width of the driveway at one time. Draw an imaginary line and break the job down into squares of fifteen to twenty feet. Begin applying the sealer. While using a brush on an extendable handle or squeegee make sure you overlap the layers of sealant to get the best possible seal. Don’t make it too thick, thin is better. If you have bought a good sealer one coat would be sufficient. You can expect a drying time of two to three hours.

The reasons to seal your driveway are very straightforward. Putting down a driveway is an expensive proposition that you don’t want to have to do again. Therefore maintaining that driveway with small repairs yearly and using a concrete sealer when necessary are smart moves. Remember there are many things you want from the product you choose. Make sure that the concrete sealer you purchase is water repellant, helps seal the cracks, can resist deicer scaling and provide a strong barrier.
